One of the things that I love about being a wedding and newborn photographer is that I get to build personal relationships with my clients as I get to know them. I photographed Marcus and Ericka's wedding back in 2015 and just recently they welcomed their baby boy, Maddux into the world. I was absolutely delighted when they called to tell me about the arrival of their son and I was honored that they asked me to capture Maddux's newborn pictures.
Maddux came to see me for his baby pictures when he was about 2 months old. Maddux was born prematurely and although he was already a few months old, he was still very much like a little newborn. While I prefer to photograph babies at 5-14 days, there are sometimes circumstances that prevent families from coming to see me in the first few weeks of life. I will gladly photograph babies at any age and I like to remind parents that premies are often still much like a newborn, even at a few months old.
We started Maddux's newborn session with family pictures against a cream/neutral colored studio backdrop. I love the soft neutral colors that Ericka and Marcus choose for these pictures. The cream and brown clothing really looks great against a solid, neutral backdrop and draws the focus onto their sweet baby, Maddux. Sometimes the parent portion is my favorite part of the session as you get to see how truly proud and happy the new parents are to be holding their sweet little newborn.
After we finished family pictures, I photographed just Maddux on the beanbag. I used a cream colored fabric to match the backdrop that we used for family pictures. I was able to capture a few pictures of Maddux sleeping on the beanbag before he woke up hungry and needed to eat. At the studio, newborn sessions are always on the baby's schedule so as soon as a baby shows any signs of being hungry, we take a break to feed.
Once Maddux was fed and sleepy again, we moved on to some pictures using my studio reclaimed wood wall. Marcus has a huge collection of antlers that he's found in the forrest near their house in the White Salmon area. The family brought these antlers and asked me to incorporate them into the session (some of these antlers were also used at Marcus & Ericka's wedding in 2015). I love when clients bring something sentimental that they'd like incorporated into the session. The antlers looked so great against my studio floor and I also used some greenery that I picked up that morning from Tammy's Floral to accent the set-up. I love how this floor set-up turned out with my posing props and the family's antlers.
We finished Maddux's newborn photos on the bean bag with a flokati rug. I swaddled Maddux in a grey scarf and then laid him down on the bean bag. I love how his little fingers stick out of the swaddle. I also used this opportunity to capture some up-close detail shots of Maddux's little hands, feet, mouth, nose, eyes, etc. Detail images of a baby are a perfect addition to a photo album to showcase your newborn session.
This was such a fun session to plan and photograph. Take a peak at Maddux's darling baby pictures captured by Gorge-Us Photography:
